GSM is one of the practical specifications to consider when selecting interlining for garments. It indicates the weight of the material and can help manufacturers compare lighter and heavier options. For kurtas and ethnic daywear, the choice needs to reflect the fabric, garment design, and location where the interlining will be applied. A non woven fusible interlining may be used for a collar, placket, or cuff without being applied to the entire garment. Because these areas have different construction requirements, choosing a suitable GSM can help achieve the intended level of support without adding unnecessary body.
Lighter fabrics generally call for a lighter interlining because their natural drape is an important part of the finished garment. Adding too much structure can make a soft material feel different from its original character. A heavier interlining may be appropriate where a stronger, more defined construction is required, but it should be evaluated against the actual fabric. This is why GSM should not be considered in isolation. Non woven interlining needs to be judged after bonding so the manufacturer can understand how the combined materials behave rather than simply comparing product specifications.
The application also influences the selection. A collar may need enough support to retain its shape, while a front placket needs stability around buttons and buttonholes. A cuff may require support depending on whether the design calls for a defined or softer finish. These areas can therefore require different interlining choices within the same garment. Testing a sample of each application can reveal whether the selected weight provides enough structure without making the section unnecessarily firm. It also gives manufacturers an opportunity to assess the hand-feel and appearance before beginning bulk production.

Within that range, 30–55 GSM is specifically identified for women's formal wear, including kurtas, while 40–55 GSM is stated for front plackets on shirts and kurtas. These specifications can serve as a reference when reviewing options for ethnic daywear. However, the final choice should still be tested with the actual base fabric and garment construction. A small fused sample can show whether the selected GSM supports the intended area while preserving the desired movement and overall character of the kurta.
