GSM vs Thickness in Non-Woven Interlining Fabric

GSM and thickness are two important properties to consider when choosing non woven interlining fabric, but they describe different characteristics. GSM stands for grams per square metre and indicates the weight of a material over a defined area. Thickness refers to the physical depth of the material. Understanding this distinction helps garment manufacturers compare samples more accurately and select materials suited to their production requirements.
Two interlining samples with similar GSM values may not have the same thickness or handle. Fibre arrangement, bonding methods and finishing processes can influence the material's physical structure. Similarly, a thicker material is not automatically the best choice for every garment. A structured collar may require a different level of support from a lightweight placket, cuff or other reinforced section. The final selection should reflect the outer fabric, garment design and finish rather than one measurement alone.
When comparing non woven fusible interlining, start by checking the supplier's stated GSM and product specifications. If thickness consistency is important, measure several points on each sample using a suitable method. Look for noticeable differences across the width and length, and compare the results with your agreed requirements. Maintain consistent measurement conditions when assessing multiple samples. This makes the comparison more useful and helps distinguish genuine material differences from variations caused by the testing method.
Physical measurements should be followed by an application test. Fuse each candidate sample to the intended outer fabric using the planned production conditions. Examine the finished panel for stiffness, surface smoothness, shape and handling. Record which sample gives the most suitable result for the garment component. A product that meets the target GSM may still be unsuitable if its thickness, feel or fused appearance does not meet the application requirements. By evaluating GSM, thickness and practical performance together, manufacturers can establish clearer material specifications and make more informed decisions before committing to bulk quantities.
