Understanding GSM in Non-Woven Interlining

GSM stands for grams per square metre and measures the weight of a fabric over a standard area. It is commonly used when comparing interlining specifications because it provides a consistent way to describe material weight. However, GSM alone does not establish how stiff, soft or suitable a product will be for a particular garment. When comparing non woven interlining fabric, manufacturers should also consider the base material, adhesive coating and intended application.

A higher GSM indicates greater weight per unit area, but the finished result depends on other product characteristics. Fibre composition, bonding method and coating can influence how the material feels and behaves after application. The same weight may not perform identically across products with different constructions. For this reason, non woven fusible interlining should be evaluated through its complete specification rather than selected on GSM alone. The intended garment component also matters because collars, cuffs and plackets have different support requirements.

To compare options, start by identifying the level of reinforcement required and the characteristics of the outer fabric. Ask for the relevant product specifications and test a sample using the intended application process. After cooling, examine the bond, flexibility, surface appearance and overall feel. This practical assessment helps manufacturers determine whether a grade suits the garment. If a material is being considered for a new fabric or design, repeat the test rather than assuming the previous result will apply.

Double Ghoda, a trade name of B.C. Impex, supplies non-woven interlining for wholesale buyers. Its range includes black and white material in 100 cm width and 90-metre rolls, with a bonded polyester-fibre base and PES adhesive coating. The minimum wholesale order is 1,000 metres. Buyers should confirm the specific grade and GSM available for their requirements before purchasing. Considering weight alongside construction and sample performance supports more informed material selection.
