Why GSM Matters When Buying Shirt Interlining

When manufacturers compare interlining products, GSM is often one of the first specifications they examine. GSM, or grams per square meter, indicates the weight of the material and provides a useful starting point for estimating how much structure it will add to a garment. However, selecting an interlining solely because it has a higher GSM can lead to poor results.

A lightweight shirt needs internal support that works with its construction rather than overpowering it. A heavier grade can help create a defined collar on structured formal shirting, but the same material may make a soft casual shirt feel rigid. Lighter grades generally allow a more natural collar roll and can maintain comfort during extended wear. Non woven fusible interlining gives manufacturers flexibility because its bonded-fibre construction can provide support without the bulk associated with heavier structural materials.

GSM is only one part of the specification. Adhesive coating is equally important because the interlining must remain securely attached to the fashion fabric. A polyester-based thermoplastic coating melts during pressing and forms the bond as it cools. Uneven coating can result in weak areas, while unsuitable press temperature, pressure, or timing can compromise the finished garment.

Manufacturers should therefore test both weight and bonding performance together. Fuse a sample using the actual shirt fabric, allow it to cool, and inspect the surface. Then wash the sample to determine whether the bond remains stable. Look for bubbling, delamination, or edge lifting.

A reliable non woven interlining fabric should deliver the right balance between weight, adhesion, flexibility, and comfort. Treating GSM as one component of the overall specification makes it easier to achieve consistent shirt quality.
