How to Check Non Woven Interlining Fabric Quality Before Ordering

A specification sheet can tell you the GSM and basic construction, but it cannot show you exactly how non woven interlining fabric will behave once it is fused to your garment material. That is why sample testing should happen before a large purchase. Start by checking the surface, hand-feel and overall consistency of the sample. Then place it against the fashion fabric you intend to use. The combination should feel balanced rather than overly stiff. If your garment requires a particular level of softness or structure, compare the sample against that requirement instead of simply judging whether the material feels thick.

The next step is to carry out a small fusing test. Use the same fabric and, as closely as possible, the same temperature, pressure and fusing conditions used during production. Check whether the adhesive bonds evenly across the surface and whether the material remains stable after cooling. Pay attention to areas where the garment will bend or fold, particularly collars, cuffs and plackets. A sample that looks good when flat may feel too rigid once it is stitched and folded. Testing the actual combination gives you a much better indication of production performance.

After approval, keep the tested sample as your quality reference. Record the GSM, shade, width and other agreed specifications alongside it so your team can compare future deliveries. It is also worth checking the incoming rolls before sending them to the cutting or fusing section. If you're purchasing in large quantities, consistency between rolls matters just as much as the initial sample. A simple approval and inspection process can prevent a small specification difference from affecting an entire production batch.
